What is kaupapa-led AI guidance?
Kaupapa-led AI guidance means building your kura's response to artificial intelligence around your own tikanga and mātauranga Māori, rather than adapting a generic template written for a different context. It covers staff and student AI use across learning from a whakaaro Māori perspective - what generative AI is useful for, where it puts learning, privacy or academic integrity at risk - and how te reo Māori and mātauranga Māori can be protected throughout.

Most AI-in-schools content focuses on productivity: saving teachers time, generating resources, or adopting a generic policy template.
AI capability in education is about more than efficiency. We need to help tauira use these tools without sacrificing the thinking, learning and potential they're meant to develop.
And the approach is kaupapa Māori by design. The wānanga is built and delivered with tikanga, mātauranga Māori, te reo Māori and your kura's own kawa at its core.
This helps your kura make deliberate decisions about where AI supports learning, where it starts doing the learning for the learner, and how it can be used (or not) in ways that align with your kaupapa.

Pera Barrett (Ngāti Raukawa ki te Tonga, Te Ātiawa ki Whakarongotai, Ngāti Toa Rangatira) is the founder of Kaha Create and an experienced kaupapa Māori facilitator who has worked with dozens of teachers on AI from a kaupapa Māori foundation. He's also AI and Innovation Lead at Te Wānanga o Raukawa, and lead designer and facilitator of Ngā Taura a Māui, the Te Tiriti in Health framework.
Our learning and knowledge holding was colonised in my nana's generation. Now our children's learning and potential is being colonised by big tech.

What is kaupapa-led AI training for schools?
It’s a facilitated wānanga plus a bespoke AI learning hub for your kura, built around your own tikanga rather than generic AI-safety advice. It gives staff and students a shared, values-grounded approach to using AI instead of leaving it to individual kaiako.
How is this different from a free AI policy template?
A template is a document you adapt yourself. This is a live wānanga built around your kura’s own kawa, followed by a hub you keep using for 12 months — an ongoing relationship, not a one-off download.
How much does it cost?
From $1,490 plus GST in year one, covering the wānanga and your first year of hub access. Year 2 renewal is $499 plus GST a year for continued hub access.
Is this only for kura kaupapa Māori, or any school?
Any school or kaiako team can take part. The approach is kaupapa Māori-led by design, and it’s shaped to fit your kura’s own context, whether that’s a kura kaupapa Māori, a Māori-medium unit, or a mainstream school.
How do we protect mātauranga Māori and te reo Māori me ōna tikanga when staff and students use AI?
The wānanga works through this directly with your staff, building bespoke tikanga for AI use and a framework for staff-ākonga conversations, so protecting mātauranga Māori is part of how your kura uses AI, not an afterthought.
What do we get after the wānanga?
A branded AI learning hub with 12 months’ access, video resources, a whakapapa record of your kaupapa, and priority support to train an in-house AI champion.
What will staff actually learn in the AI wānanga?

Yes. The wānanga produces practical, kura-specific guidance for student AI use, which you can use as the basis for a school policy alongside your existing processes.
